“While we Christians were prayer walking the block, the Muslims bought that block and built a mosque on it”
– Dr. Pat Francis
“Many times we find ourselves waiting for God to partner with us using spirit realm power, when sometimes God is waiting on us to partner with Him using natural realm efforts. This misunderstanding among Christians today causes so many of us to remain stagnant and in a holding pattern waiting for a prophetic word to come to pass or waiting on God to do for us what we should do ourselves. In the name of waiting for a miracle, it is possible to commit the sin of irresponsibility.”
– Derek Schneider
When it comes to managing the earth, and excelling in all that we do as believers, the reality is that we must excel in both the “spiritual realm” and “earthly realm.” Sadly, so many unbelievers and even people of other faiths have discovered this principle before many Christians. You see, we are spirit beings in an earthly body that was made from the dust of the earth. Our spirit man is subject to spiritual laws, while our earthly body and mind are subject to natural laws. Of course God can override these natural laws through spiritual power, or “miracles.” God has established both the spiritual realm and the natural realm on “laws and principles.”
This essentially was the power and excellence that was at work in the biblical heroes, Daniel, Joseph, and many others. They understood how to be excellent in both spiritual wisdom, and the earthly wisdom of the society at that time. This was highlighted in my previous article entitled, “Why the World Belongs to the Organized.” Why would an organized person (someone adhering to earthly laws and principles with excellence) excel on earth? This occurs because he or she is functioning by the laws and principles that God Himself established on earth.
For You have magnified Your word above all Your name – Psalm 138:2
When it comes to earthly realm laws and principles, whether someone is a praying person or even a Christian is inconsequential. Anyone who adheres to the principles that God has established here on earth will excel in their sphere or field. We see this occur all around us everyday. This is actually why far too often, believers are the “tail and not the head.” Far too often in the name of spirituality, we break earthly laws and principles, expecting God to work a miracle for us.
Principle: If you can discover the fixed laws that rule
and govern a sphere of life, then you can rule
as God rules and certain outcomes on earth can be predicted.
Although God is the Author of all of life, He has established the earth in such a way that it can function without His constant direct intervention. In Genesis, we see that He created everything once and then systematized it so that life reproduced after its own kind based upon laws and principles of life and reproduction. For example, God produced vegetation and then subjected it to a system so that it reproduces after its own kind. He created gravity and evaporation – He doesn’t have to use miracle power to send the rain in its season. He has subjected it to a system of evaporation that waters the earth. God does not have to use miraculous power to cause the sun to shine all over the world. He has systematized it based on His principles to function in such a way that the sun rises every morning all over the world. It is true that He alone is the Author of all life and is the great CEO.
Although God is the Creator of the Universe, there are laws and principles that apply to the earth realm with or without God’s influence. Many laws and principles are not just restricted to the Christian community. These laws and principles apply to unbelievers as well. For example, whether a person is a Christian or not the law of gravity applies to them. The law of sowing and reaping applies to a person whether they are a Christian or not. Whether a businessman is a Christian or not the laws of money and financial stewardship still (outside of a miracle) determine his prosperity. This is so much the case that even unbelievers (who violate God’s spiritual laws all the time) often succeed in the natural realm because they dedicate themselves to training in a specific area and learn the laws and principles of that area.
Principle: If you can discover the fixed laws that rule
a particular sphere of life (i.e. science, sports, business,
government, etc.) then you can rule (excel) in that sphere.
Therefore, life becomes predictable.
Many times in life we find ourselves waiting on God to perform a “miracle” when we actually can accomplish the task ourselves, if we understand the laws and principles of that situation. Because God has given us a mind and other various resources to accomplish what is in His heart on behalf of Him, it actually can be a mistake to “wait on God” for everything, and even to pray about some things. Many times we find ourselves praying over and over again for God to do something that He has already done or is waiting on us to do. Many times we find ourselves waiting for God to partner with us using spirit realm power, when sometimes God is waiting on us to partner with Him using natural realm efforts.
This misunderstanding among Christians today causes so many of us to remain stagnant and in a holding pattern waiting for a prophetic word to come to pass or waiting on God to do for us what we should do ourselves. In the name of waiting for a miracle, it is possible to commit the sin of irresponsibility. God has given us so much and so many resources to be able to fulfill what is in His heart. The imbalance in the area of the spiritual realm and natural realm responsibilities has created a culture today that tends to lean away from practical responsibility and emphasizes an attempt to LIVE by miracles. We, as spirit beings also exist in an earthly suit, therefore, apart from the miraculous, we are subject to earthly laws and principles.
In the recent Canadian election I heard about believers going to “prayer walk” the voting booths or polls. In fact, much of this action was taken in light of a well-known prophetic voice who gave this direction. First of all, I appreciate prayer – all prayer in any situation. And I believe that God appreciates prayer, and prayer often accomplishes more than we realize. Secondly, I also believe in being radically obedient to the “Word of the Lord.” If God told you to prayer walk at the polls, praying for voters to vote a certain way, then that is what you must do. After all “God’s ways are not our ways” etc. However, my desire here is to present another side of this coin. After all there are two sides to every coin.
Let’s consider for a moment the idea and goal of praying outside of the polls. We believed that somehow by praying in close proximity to the voting booths, we could invite God to change the minds of voters and have them vote according to who we believers felt should be voted into office. We were inviting God to override the hearts and minds of voters who had made up their minds on who they wanted to vote for long before we prayed. Maybe even God Himself made up His mind on who would be voted in long before you prayed! The reality is, people voted based upon the moral compass of our society, which in fact hinges on the church’s moral compass.
“As the church goes, so goes the society.”
The way the people voted is an indicator of where our society is at, and ultimately where the church is at. Now do I believe that God can work a miracle in some people’s hearts by praying at the polls? Yes. However, I believe it would be an exception. Do I believe that those prayers helped mobilize believers to get out and vote? Yes. In fact, in this recent election, we had more voting than any election in the past 20 years. I believe this was a result of the rally to prayer and unity that was initiated by the church leading up to the election. Apart from a miracle, it is going to take more than pre-election prayer for us the church to steer a nation and shift culture politically. It will take prayer, strategic preparation of the people and the shifting of culture.
I like the term that Rob Parker is using in his book, “We Have a Voice – Equipping to Effect Change in the Public Square.” He calls it “prayerful action.” This is a great emphasis on a lifestyle of prayer while walking out strategic action adhering to the laws and principle of life.
As Stacey Campbell said so well, “It is not ‘either or,’ it is ‘both and.” Prayer and educated action becomes a double edged sword causing the believer to excel in life!
